Each numbered, keepsake hoof pick has my maker’s mark, the month/year, and the sequence number stamped on the back. My dad, Bud Forell, taught me much of what I know about horses. He designed the shape of the hoof pick and made several for his six kids & family friends out of plain steel, sending them to my husband, Joe, to mount with silver, add the names, and engrave. My dad crossed the Great Divide in December of 2005, and in his memory, when I started to engrave in 2006, the first pattern I drew was a design that would fit in the outline of the hoof pick he designed. Joe has been a great tutor, encouraging me to learn engraving, teaching me the process of finishing the steel and mounting precious metal overlays. The steel I use is some of same material that he uses in making Spiller Spurs & Bits, so if you decide to use the hoof pick, it is certainly ‘cowboy tough’. If you put it up as a keepsake, know that it was made as a tribute to two great men in my life. -Baru
